captureACCESS – Capturing geographic and perceived access barriers to health


The aim of the project captureACCESS is to identify geographical and perceived access barriers to ambulatory health care services in Germany. This project is based on previous studys conducted by the junior scientist group CHeC during the first stage of funding, in which a correlation between physician density and ambulatory care sensitive hospitalizations or the utilisation of cancer screening services was found. Furthermore, it was shown that health-related outcomes are subject to regional variation, which can partly be explained by the inequitable distribution of health services accessibility. 


The project pursues two targets in two working fields:

  • Identification of access barriers: Following a conceptualization and operationalization of accessibility to ambulatory care services, access barriers will be assessed using a survey of residents in Berlin and Brandenburg considering both the geographic dimension of access and the subjective perception from the patient’s viewpoint.
  • Comparison between geographic and perceived access barriers: Differences between subjective perceived and objective measurable access barriers will be analyzed in the second work package. At the same time it will be investigated whether the differences vary depending on socio-economic factors.


First, tools for measureing accessibility as well as  access barriers will be identified by taking recourse to existing literature. On this basis a questionnaire will be developed which will be used to capture the subjective perceived accessibility of ambulatory health care in Berlin and Brandenburg. In the second step geographic access barriers to health services will be assessed and merged with the collected individual data in cooperation with the Beuth Hochschule für Technik in Berlin.
