Emergency care services: analysis of the organisation and payment systems in a selection of countries

Cooperation project with KCE – Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre

This project is part of a larger study on the organisation and payment of Belgian emergency care services (https://kce.fgov.be/ [1]). The project aims to investigate how emergency care services are organized and paid for in 5-7 high income countries. The results of the project will inform discussions on a reform of emergency care services in Belgium. The project will include a review of scientific and grey literature and a survey of experts in selected countries in order to address the following research questions: (1) how are emergency care services organized in a selection of countries? (2) Which payment systems are used for these services and what incentives do they entail? (3) Are there interesting examples of reforms that have centralized emergency service delivery and have reduced inappropriate use of emergency departments by patients?
