Seminar on Quantitative Methods in Health Planning and Health Care Research

The Seminar will be held during WS 2018/2019, Location: H0107

Schedule Wintercourse 2018/2019: Once a week starting Nov. 2nd through Nov. 30th, every Friday afternoon 4pm (s.t.) to 8pm. Additionally students’ presentations will be held in blocks End of March 2019/Beginning of April 2019.

Designated courses of study: This Seminar is especially designed for industrial engineering and management students majoring in health technology as well as MINE students. In addition, the course is open to Public Health Master Students (BSPH). Furthermore, students who interested in the seminar topics are welcome, given the available slots.

Seminar goals: Seminar participants gain practical and in-depth insights into the tasks covered and issues dealt with by the public health services (ÖGD) of the federal state of Berlin. The seminar is held by a member of the Berlin Senate Administration for Health, Care and Gender Equality (department of health in the field of Health reporting, planning and statistical-epidemiological methods). In general, the health planning branch of the Berlin public health services deals with assessing citizens’ requirements for as well as the corresponding status quo of all types of health services offered to the general public in order to identify both strengths and weaknesses of the current healthcare service system. In order to do so, quantitative statistical epidemiological methods are applied on data provided by health and social reporting. Hence, the seminar provides participants with practical and up-to-date insights on how quantitative analysis of health data and social reporting data can be implemented to create impulses and incentives for political action within the federal State of Berlin.  Participants of the seminar are enabled to transfer acquired methods and skills to various other fields and research topics.

Seminar structure: The Seminar is held on four to five blocked dates (Introduction, Basics, Implementation and Practical Exercise) including the identification of topics for the term paper and the final presentation, and one or two dates regarding the presentation of the term paper results, depending on the number of students participating.

Grading requirements are the presentation of the term paper’s research question, methods used, results and implications drawn (approx. 15-20 min presentation) as well as a written term paper itself (approx.. 10 pages). Participants work collaboratively in teams (max. 4 members). The general requirements depend on team size.

Educational content:

Based on applied up-to-date health planning and reporting topics, students will cover comprehensive tasks and will be able to investigate a practical topic regarding current topics of health planning within the public health services of Berlin. In collaboration with the Berlin Senate Administration for Health, Care and Gender Equality and fellow students participating in seminar, participants’ term papers and results will be presented and discussed in the course of the final presentations.

During the introductory part of the seminar students are provided with both methodological and practical knowledge, e.g. which statistics are generally available, what are legal grounds they are founded on, which structural analyses and applications are already conducted within Berlin health reporting, and what kind of statistical epidemiological methods are applied. Students deepen their previously acquired knowledge in the practical session  which additionally enables them  to choose a topic for their term paper and the final presentation.

Prerequisites for Enrollment/Desirable:

Interest in the German Health System in general and in health reporting, planning and policy topics of the federal state of Berlin in particular.

Interest in conducting scientific research, performing systematic reviews, gathering and analyzing data implementing appropriate IT- and software solutions such as MSSQLServer, MS Access, SPSS and/or MS Excel.

Compulsory: None given.

Examination Criteria: Grading is based on the content and quality of the presentation of the term paper’s research question, methods implemented, results and implications drawn (approx. 15-20 minute presentation) as well as of the handed-in term paper itself (5 to 7 pages). If students work as a group, the number of pages that need to be handed in or the scope of the topic covered will be adjusted to ensure equal levels of difficulty and comparability of achievements. The grading is based on the department’s uniform grading scale.
