The
Department of Health Care Management has been a WHO Collaborating
Centre for Health Systems Research and Management since 2005 and in
that role carries out activities in support of the WHO work
programmes.
The collaboration mainly takes place through
the department's involvement in the European Observatory on Health
Systems and Policies. The European Observatory on Health Systems and
Policies supports and promotes evidence-based health policy-making
through comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the dynamics of health
care systems in Europe. The Observatory is a partnership between the
World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, the governments
of Belgium, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain
and Sweden, the Veneto Region of Italy, the European Commission, the
European Investment Bank, the World Bank, UNCAM (French National Union
of Health Insurance Funds), the London School of Economics and
Political Science, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical

The Berlin University of Technology's Department of
Health Care Management is one of the Observatory's three research
hubs. The other three hubs include the London School of Economics and
the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. As a research
hub, the Department of Health Care Management and is responsible for
two main activities: (1) drafting health system reviews (see
"HiTs [3]" for more details), and (2) authoring and
co-authoring a range of studies on the latest developments in
international health care. The staff of the Berlin hub participates in
regular policy dialogues and have presented their work at numerous
international conferences and seminars.
